Hantavirus Map USA 2026

The United States accounts for the majority of Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) cases in the Americas. The primary threat is Sin Nombre virus, carried by the deer mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus), and risk is concentrated in western states where these rodents are most abundant. Cases peak between May and October, when people are more likely to disturb rodent-infested spaces.

Why the Western US?

The deer mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus) is the primary reservoir for Sin Nombre virus in North America. Its range covers much of the western and central United States, from the Pacific coast to the Great Plains. States like Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and California consistently report the highest case counts because their climate and terrain — forests, grasslands, and foothills — support large deer mouse populations.

Outbreaks often follow environmental shifts. Heavy rainfall from El Niño events can trigger rodent population booms, increasing the odds of human exposure. The 1993 Four Corners outbreak, which first identified Sin Nombre virus, followed an unusually wet spring that drove deer mouse populations to 10–15 times their normal density.

Most human infections occur when people breathe in aerosolized virus from rodent droppings, urine, or saliva — typically while cleaning out cabins, opening seasonal sheds, or camping in rodent-infested shelters. The fatality rate for HPS in the US remains around 36%, making early recognition critical.

How to Read USA Map Signals

The USA map view separates confirmed records, monitoring signals, and source mentions. Diagnosis location and exposure location may differ — always check the source link for full context.

State-Level Context

Below is a breakdown of reviewed signals by state. Counts reflect public signals in our tracker, not official CDC case totals. For official data, visit the CDC hantavirus surveillance page.

California

California is one of the states most affected by hantavirus in the US. The 2012 Yosemite outbreak — which sickened ten people and killed three — traced back to deer mouse infestations in the park's signature tent cabins. Risk is highest in the Sierra Nevada foothills and mountain communities where deer mice nest in seasonal structures. Most California cases occur between May and October, when cabin owners and campers are most likely to disturb rodent-contaminated spaces.

No reviewed signals currently in this view. This does not mean zero risk — hantavirus exposure can occur year-round. Check the live map for the latest context, and follow CDC guidance for your state.

Colorado

Colorado sits at the center of the US hantavirus belt. It was part of the 1993 Four Corners outbreak that first identified Sin Nombre virus in the Americas. The state consistently reports some of the highest case counts nationally, with risk concentrated in rural and foothill areas where deer mice nest in cabins, sheds, and campgrounds. Most cases occur between May and October when people are more likely to be cleaning seasonal properties or camping.

Nebraska

Nebraska's hantavirus risk comes from its agricultural landscape. Deer mice thrive in and around grain storage, barns, and farm outbuildings — especially during harvest season when rodents seek shelter indoors. The state's first confirmed HPS case was reported in the late 1990s, and periodic cases have appeared since, typically in rural counties during spring and summer months.
